You plug any standard analog telephone into the other side of the magicJack and it allows you to make unlimited local or long distance telephone calls to any phone (landline or cellular) in the United States or Canada. You also get a free phone number with your magicJack so it can be utilized both to receive and place calls. Area codes for approximately 70% of the U.S. are available. The first year of service is FREE. After the first year it's only $19.95 per year. Installation is simple and takes 60 seconds. All you need is Windows XP or Windows Vista or Mac and one of the following: DSL, broadband, cable internet, WiFi, WiMax, or high speed internet service. D. Davis Said: Yes, it works as advertised (only regret is that I didn't do it sooner)... ( Jun. 27th 2010 )

I've used Magic Jack for one and a half years and my only regret is that I didn't do this sooner. With my home internet cable connection, the sound quality is flawless and it's very reliable. Magic Jack has now become my home phone and the money saved is now paying for my internet connection. I plan on using this for international calling for an upcoming mission trip to Kenya, for calls back to the US. I was skeptical; but, this looks like the evolution of phone service (for pennies on the dollar).

Overall pleased with the magicjack. Tech service has been reliable so far; occasionally experience some loss of voice quality when using the magicjack making it difficult to understand the person's voice.

Alexandrian Said: Works as expected ( Apr. 7th 2010 )

I was first skeptical about this device for its low cost but it works as desired despite the fact that the DSL service I have is lowest package offered by the provider (lowest speed). It's a great money saver compared to standard home phone services. I like the feature where you can listen to your voicemail on an mpeg file that's emailed to you.

Vladas Mazelis Said: Great little device ( Mar. 19th 2010 )

I really like it. The set up is near automatic, just plug it into a USB port on any computer, while connected to the internet, and the driver and dialing software will be installed. They try to sell you some add-ons like an insurance for the device in case its damaged or lost, a discounted 5-year service, an availability to choose some special number etc. You have an easy choice to accept or to decline any of those offers. A user can choose any area code regardless of where the unit will be used. Far from all US location codes are available, but in my view that's no big deal, because plenty of area codes and numbers are available.

Then a regular phone can be plugged into the other end of the device, or it can be used without a phone, using an on-screen dialer and either a computer's microphone and speakers, or a headset with microphone. Don't forget to adjust sound volume and microphone level settings in the Control Panel or from the sound icon in the desktop tray. That's it, you can make a call or receive it. You can also install it the same way on any other computer, only now it will "remember" its number and your settings, made during the first setup. And the sound quality is very good, if you've adjusted your PC sound right.

No, it's not going to be our primary, secondary or tertiary phone (having to run a computer at all times, with its sound system and speakers on is an issue, in my view). It's not going to replace our main VOIP phone, or any cell phones. But it's a fun back up alternative while traveling or whenever we feel like using it for fun and pleasure.
